Just some random musings…

When I was a super active SCUBA instructor in college, I worried endlessly about impressing my instructor and the owner of the dive shop. I got burned out from doing mask skills two or three nights a week. Messing up in the shop or having a staff member call in sick (meaning I had to teach mask skills) was the end of the world.

Fast forward ten(ish) years. I still stress about keeping my boss happy. I’m apparently at that age where “major life events” are far more common and I’m living through a couple with family members. I’m bummed my GUE Fundies course was postponed due to visibility, then scheduling conflicts. Now I go and knock a Rockstar over on my newish MacBook Air and wait not-so-patiently for my turn at the Apple Store. Of course it happened right as I was about to do the first massive promotion of a project I’ve been working on for work for months. It’s the end of the world.

To people who worry about finding a job, paying their rent, getting enough food or having access to clean drinking water, all of my world ending events are completely irrelevant. A hedge fund manager losing a cool million is completely irrelevant to me.

Dive instructors in locations with poor visibility find the cool little stuff (or sink their own cool stuff), write a distinctive specialty, make it fun and educational and promote the hell out of it. To a tropics diver, it’s still low visibility. But to the low viz instructor, it was an opportunity.

You know what I’m going to do though? I’m going to keep my fingers crossed that the damage to my computer isn’t that bad, hope that AppleCare helps and that I don’t have to buy a new computer that isn’t in this months budget. I’m going to talk to people about backup systems. I’m fully backed up, so this could be far worse. Perspective. I’m going to bust ass any way I can to make it through to some vacation days later in September. When those vacation days come, I’m going to disconnect. It will be wonderful.

To a computer worker, liquid damage is the end of the world. Except it’s not. And things could be worse.

I think I need a sippy cup from now on though.
