Who Dropped The Ball?

Yes, you’re getting two posts on my day off! Lucky you! Missed the first one? Not anymore!

I have a confession to make: I’m a huge fan of The Hunger Games trilogy.

Last night, I saw The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the second movie in the series. As a fan, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and found it to be an incredible adaption of the book. Don’t worry, I won’t give out any spoilers.

Guess what I did when I got home?

I searched for:

  • Hunger Games: Catching Fire wetsuit
  • Hunger Games: Catching Fire wetsuit for sale
  • Buy Hunger Games: Catching Fire wetsuit

Guess who the proud owner of a Hunger Games: Catching Fire wetsuit is?

Not this guy 🙁

Seriously Dive Gear Manufacturers?

For years now at DEMA 2020 Vision sessions, we’ve talked about how we need to get more exposure for SCUBA in movies and on TV.

Yet not one dive gear manufacturer thought to get in on this action? Even if you got out SEO’d by E! News articles talking about how the actors discovered they could pee in their outfits or what they wore under them, no one is running pay per click campaigns for these obvious keywords.

Maybe some manufacturer did get in on the action, but has some kind of licensing agreement that prohibits them from selling them. If that’s the case, time to have a stern talking to with the lawyers who negotiated that deal. You could have at least gotten permission to say you made them even if you couldn’t sell them. But I figure if some cheap costume company can sell a spandex body suit designed to look like the suits from the movie (for $75 shipped even!), you probably could have worked out some kind of arrangement.

Is There Really A Market?

I’m in the market for a new wetsuit and if I’m going to spend the money (all else being equal), I wouldn’t mind something cool looking. If you think I’m an anomaly, why do manufacturers make their gear in anything other than black?

I’d wager demand will go up next October when people are coming up with costume ideas, especially if they are affordable skins or 3mm suits. Suits already come in black and gray with designs printed on them, the suits from the movie are really nothing unique beyond that.

I guess I’ll just keep my eyes open for a sale on the Waterproof W4, at least then I can look like I may have been in Tron. Maybe by next Halloween, someone in this industry will actually work with the media companies like we keep suggesting at 2020 Vision sessions and will get a suit or skin out.

I won’t hold my breath.
